Winter trail construction update

The Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association is thrilled to announce that work on the 2-metre wide,  1.8-km long, gravel surfaced trail connecting Banded Peak School to the Bragg Creek Centre began in October, 2009. The preliminary work on the trail will be complete by the end of the year. The finishing touches and a Grand Opening will take place in the spring of 2010. The Pathway, which has been on the resident wish list since the Banded Peak School was built, is finally going to become a reality due to the persistence and hard work of the GBCTA and $180,000 in funding from the Federal and Provincial governments.

Become a Friend of the Trail

We intend to raise an additional $9,000 through our "Friends of the Trail" campaign. Donors can sponsor 10 metres of trail for $50 and get their name on a plaque at the trailhead.

• When you donate to the trail, you get a Trail Certificate and your name inscribed on a “Friends of the Trail” plaque at the trailhead.
• Sponsor a half-kilometre for $2,500 or one kilometre for $5,000.
Individuals will receive a tax deductible receipt for their donation. Businesses can claim their donation as an advertising expense.

Please see our brochure with the sponsorship form.

The Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association (GBCTA) has successfully worked with the Municipal District of Rocky View to obtain approvals for the construction of the Banded Peak Trail. school path announced  Agreements between Alberta Transportation, the MD and the GBCTA have been reached with issues such as construction cost, liability and maintenance covered off. Alberta Transportation approved a separate road allowance to the MD to accommodate the trail along Highway 22, south of the hamlet of Bragg Creek. The separate road allowance  (about 6 to 7 meters wide) will be within the existing highway road allowance and next to the west fence line.

The Banded Peak Trail is part of the conceptual plan for a trail network as laid out in the Area Structure Plan and will be the second community trail built by this volunteer group.  The GBCTA is a charitable organization made up of local residents and is in need of new members who are interested in helping with this project and other exciting ones to follow.

December 2009 update

  • The pathway has almost been completed.  The top layer of gravel was put on just before the snow came.
  • John (Excavating Contractor) and his crew have cleaned up the majority of the site.   Sides have been smoothed out and rocks placed around the culverts.
  • The signs should be manufactured this week and hopefully installed along the pathway during our next few days of balmy weather.
  • Also in the near future, a cable / short post fence will be built along the edge of the pathway next to the entrance road at the school.
  • John is looking for 5 nice large boulders to put at all the trail heads to deter motorized vehicles.
  • Next spring, grass seed will be placed along the edges of the pathway and we will install a few short lengths of post and rail fencing.

The Friends of the Banded Peak School Trail fund raiser is off to a great start.  So far this program has raised $2,300 and we are well on the way to a target of $10,000.  This fund raiser is planned to continue until May and our opening ceremony is tentatively planned for June next spring.  A few ideas were to create a couple of thermometers to track the progress, maybe we can keep one at the school and one in the hamlet?  Please pass the word around to anyone you may think is interested in supporting this project.
